EAST Hong Kong’s Organic, Women-Led Period Care for Hotels

Hotels think of everything. The vanity kit with a toothbrush and floss. Shampoo and conditioner. A comb. A sewing kit, just in case. Every detail is carefully considered, with a growing emphasis on sustainability and a consistent focus on guest comfort.

Except when it comes to menstruation.

In our team’s research across hotels, we identified two key issues:

Firstly, access to period products was almost always hidden. Guests described having to make “uncomfortable calls to reception,” or worse—avoiding the interaction altogether and resorting to toilet paper as a makeshift solution until they could reach a store. That’s a long way from a five-star experience.

Secondly, when menstrual products were provided, they were almost always plastic-heavy, mainstream options—with little care for their sustainability, brand values or ingredients. Unlike other amenities, where great care is taken to source ethical and premium options, period care was treated as an afterthought.

That’s why EAST Hong Kong’s decision stands out. A premium lifestyle hotel in Hong Kong’s Taikoo Shing, they’re known for celebrating individuality and challenging what a luxury experience can be. Rooted in values of inclusion and community, they recognized the gap and chose to fill it. But not with just any product.

They added complimentary menstrual products to their amenity list, right alongside robes, extra towels, and in-room dining. And they partnered with LUÜNA to do it: a woman-led, sustainable social enterprise tackling local period poverty with every purchase.

“Menstruation is a natural part of life, and we recognize the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding it,” said Jennifer, General Manager for EAST Hong Kong. “We want to support the well-being of our community, fostering a culture where individuals can manage their periods stress-free.” At EAST Hong Kong, it’s not enough to offer period care. It matters who it comes from, how it’s made, and what it stands for.

In Hong Kong, that small step carries weight. Period care is still absent from most public and hospitality spaces, which made EAST Hong Kong’s decision more than thoughtful: it was a first. They became the first hotel in the city to include sustainable organic cotton menstrual products as part of the guest experience. A simple update that expanded what’s considered everyday care in the industry.

But they haven’t done it alone. Since joining the Good Period Alliance, EAST Hong Kong has connected with others working toward the same goal in shifting the culture. “Connecting with companies who are taking steps to support overlooked social issues like menstrual health has fostered a sense of community and collaboration,” Jennifer said. “Together, we can amplify our impact and support one another in this important cause.”

For EAST Hong Kong, it’s not just about what happens within their hotel. It’s about showing others, not only guests, but the industry what’s possible. “Joining the Good Period Alliance could be your company's first step to supporting menstrual health,” she said. “At EAST, we want to lead by example and encourage others to do the same.” And “encourage other industry leaders to take up the mantle.”

EAST Hong Kong chose not to wait. They brought change into the room, literally, by offering quality period products from a purpose-driven brand as part of their guest experience, helping redefine what menstrual equity can look like in hospitality.

Imagine what could happen if more leaders followed their lead. What would shift, across hotels and across Hong Kong as a city, if small changes like this became the norm in every industry?
